1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is held in high regard as the first animated feature film produced in the US, the first cel-animated feature film in the world, and a huge leap forward for Disney and animation alike. With this live-action remake, it seems Disney were somehow ashamed of all this instead of proud, because every single aspect of 2025’s Snow White seems to spit on the quality, magic, and innovation of the original. Both the heroine and villain have confused, conflicting motivations and no depth whatsoever. Rachel Zegler is a blank and bland Snow White, whose proclamations about bravery and community somehow render her even less interesting than the literally two-dimensional version of 1937. Gal Gadot is astoundingly terrible as the Evil Queen, growling and barking and jerking her limbs around bizarrely. Yet even they are less odious to witness on-screen than the grotesque CGI aberrations that are the seven dwarves. With their bulging, dead eyes and contorted expressions, it’s no wonder they chose to leave these demon spawn out of the film’s title. Throw in a tepid romance, contrived escapes, cheap costumes, and cardboard cut-outs of supporting characters, and this remake is assuredly a downgrade rather than an upgrade. Snow White was supposed to be the cleverer, deeper version, yet apparently nothing was learned in almost 90 years.
